I went to the gym last night for a yoga class. I missed it by 30 minutes, my life story. But hey...it got me out of the house right after dinner time. That's a busy time of day at my house and I was more than happy to use yoga as an excuse to leave the dishes. Not that I need an excuse. I do it all the time. In fact....I decided they could wait until this morning, only I had to run out at 9am for a gym class with 2 meetings right after. I was going to clean up after the meetings but I was invited to lunch with some of my runner friends. So I went. I'm still full from that Philly cheesesteak. I'm glad I skipped helping Ed finish off his fries. When I got home the landscaper guy was waiting (working on a little surprise for my husband for Father's Day... Shhhhhhhhhh)
I couldn't let him in my house because of the dishes, so I guess I got punished for slacking....haha! Like I care....ANYWAY.....
Back to last night. My husband wanted to go for a bike ride but I won the "first out" because I had a scheduled yoga class. So he had to stay home with the kids and I pranced out the door....heehee
I met Michelle at the gym and we chatted for about 40 minutes. She's the one who told me I missed the class. I felt a twinge of guilt when I thought about Bobby pacing back and forth waiting for his turn, kids leaving a mess from dinner, dishes in the sink....but the twinge passed faster than a cramp in my calf. Out the back door of the gym I went, not a care in the world...lalalalaaaaaa
As I set up my iPod I decided to run the 3 miles home and have Bobby bring me back later to get my car. Then I thought I'd just do a 4 mile loopy. I started out at a slow pace, warming up when I felt a burst of energy. I decided to do some of those "frolics" I love so much. I ran as fast as I could for the length of the fence. I know most of you don't know how far that is, sorry, just know it's like....from here to there. Just about a telephone pole to pole distance. When I was out of breath I ran slow. I ran that way the first mile and was surprised to see it took me 7:38. Two songs. I turned around and ran the mile back to the gym the same way. That was 8:42. Two songs again, but the songs were longer than the 1st 2. (Still with me?)
As I walked to my car my coach was walking through the parking lot so I told (yelled across more like it) him what I just did. He said that's called a "tempo run". Hmmm....never heard of those but I like 'em. Left me feeling like I had a workout in a very short time. Invigorating.
As I was driving back home I passed a HOT biker. I looked again and saw that it was my husband. Man I love those bike shorts. I pulled over, he turned around and I ran back to him. We smooched in the street, both of us a little sweaty, kinda romantic. Then I asked him where he stashed the kids. My 19 yr old came home so she was with them. Lucky break for Bobby!!!
I mentioned before that I've only ever run to train for a marathon. That was for endurance and pacing, never speed, so this is all new stuff for me. I like it! It a renewed sense of learning and it's so interesting. I'm getting pumped just thinking about running fast. There's a race this Saturday but it starts late. I have to work at 9am and I won't get back in time. Kinda bummed about that. My husband reminded me I can't run ALL the races. NO FAIR!
Well...I gotta go do the dishes. Some stuff I can't get out of. Dishes are just one of them.

Shaving My 5K....
As I have already posted, I ran a 5K last weekend for kids with cleft palates. It was called The Smile Train and it raised $3000. It only takes $250 per child, so it will help 12 kids. I feel so good about that. Some of you may know I have a child who received a liver transplant when she was a year old. She'll be 22 in July!!! Over the years of spending so much time in New England Med Center in Boston, we saw many, many kids who needed so much. It was both heart breaking and a gift to have met all of them and their families. This race was a special one.
I went back and looked up all my 5K times (and one 4 miler)...

They SLIGHTLY get better each time, and I'm HAPPY with that, BUT...all of a sudden I'm feeling a whole lot of ambition to really make a difference on the next one. I have some speed training coming and I'm going to make the best of it!!
My coach, Jim, is starting a training program for a half marathon coming up in September. My two older daughters are signing up and I thought it would be AWESOME to go through the training with them. I'm so excited by this. I ask them everyday if they're really going to do it. They keep saying "Yes Mom"....LOL. They're even getting some matching Asics....YAY!!!! They don't know it yet but we're going to wear matching outfits too.....heehee. This is starting in June. I think it will help my speed too.
My friend Sherry has posted her FANTASTIC tri results here http://awomaninmotion.blogspot.com/ Check out her exciting post!! We're all so very proud of you Sherry!!! And here's to Scott's speedy recovery so he can get back into it with you.
My coach is also a very talented singer/songwriter. One of my favorite songs is called "Destiny" and he let me make a little video for it on youtube. Go check that out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa3m7l6j2VI I had a lot of fun making it, let me know what you think! It's about making choices, taking roads that lead to great things. Good song to run to and reflect with.
Happy running!!!

Slowing (or stopping) To Smell The Flowers
I mentioned a few posts ago about my method of running. I had talked with my coach, Jim about a week ago about how I didn't think I was a "real" runner because I am so lax about about it. Half the time I forget my watch, the other half I forget to time myself. Never mind the fact that I have NEVER remembered to hit the stop watch thingy on my watch. Jim listened as I talked (just one of the things I like about this guy)...and I was telling him how I don't time anything. I walk when I feel like it, I run when my legs start back up. It's a mindless method. There are times when I don't realize I've walked until I've started running again. The distance I set out to run is never the distance I wind up doing. Ever. Sometimes it's shorter, sometimes it's longer. I just never really know what I'm in for.
If I'm running with someone, I don't think twice about stopping to walk so I can enjoy the conversation. (this drives Mike CRAZY, which is why I do it when I run with him....haha). Running with Jim is an experience. He is a coach by nature, I learn something new every time we run. I walk away from those runs with a confidence only a great coach can bestow so effortlessly.
During my first couple months of training for the Sarasota Marathon with Jim, one thing that stuck in my mind was him telling me to always pay attention to my body signals. He said I'd learn to recognize the cues for when I needed a walk break and when it was time to run again. Jim said so much of it is mind over matter and believing I could do it. I had to learn to run through some stuff, like laziness, boredom or just plain not being in the mood to run. Getting the breathing down was probably the most difficult part for me. There were times when I thought I'd faint from lack of air, but I'd hear Jim's voice telling me to walk until I could breath again. It was like getting "permission" to rest a bit. I realized pretty quickly into the training that it was MUCH more enjoyable to let myself build up the endurance, rather than running until I hated it.
As I began to see that I could run for longer periods of time without stopping, I felt such a feeling of pride in myself that I learned to use this as fuel. Distance became my main focus. Endurance was what I was training for. I wanted to LEARN how to run 26.2 miles in under 5 months. I did get a few looks of utter disbelief. And I had my moments of self doubt, but luckily I had a coach who would remind me I was the captain. It was going to be up to me, so I'd pull it back together.
Jim set the pace for 12 minute miles in the beginning. I never did learn that pace, I kind of went with about an 11 mm. As soon as I told him I had the 11mm down, he said to go to 10 mm. Jim thought this would be a good pace for the marathon. It would get me a decent finishing time without killing me. He was right. I loved that marathon. I enjoyed myself immensely. I met a lot of fantastic people along the way and I didn't feel like I was dying until mile 23....lol. (I did snap out of it fairly quickly though)
Another very smart thing Jim taught me, was that all I really wanted to do for my first marathon was FINISH. He said the next marathon would only be better if I took that perspective. I admit I didn't really feel that way until about mile 2 of the marathon. I wanted to finish in 5 hours but Jim wouldn't even answer me when I asked if I could. He said try for 6 hours. I was mad at him for that....lol. I thought it meant he didn't believe I could do it. At mile 2 of that marathon it hit me for what it really was. He didn't want me to feel any pressure. He knew I'd never have another first marathon and he was trying to tell me to enjoy it for what it was. He actually said those words but my stubborness blocked it out until mile 2. I could almost hear him say it again right at that moment and I felt a relaxation that surprised me. I swear, I think I smiled every step of that 26.2 miles. Except at mile 23, but within 10 minutes I was smiling again. (I think...lol)
I told you THAT, to tell you THIS...
I learned that (almost) every step can be enjoyable. It even works with my life motto, which is...MY LIFE IS WHAT I MAKE OF IT. (my other motto is EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE) That means, if I'm feeling miserable, I have the choice to let go of whatever it is that's bothering me and have a great day, OR...I can embrace the misery and lose an entire day of my life. Anyone who knows me, knows I am happy 98% of the time. I guess it's only natural that this would tie into my running too.
Yesterday at the Minnie 15K, I felt this. I had not been able to run for almost 2 months because of the flexor. I have run 3-4 times in the last week or two, 4 miles being the longest run. With lots of walking. I had no idea how I would do in the 15K. I worried I'd lost all my endurance, I worried about my flexor being reinjured, I worried about having to pull out because of those things. But once again, when the starting gun went off and I began to run, something happened. As I put one foot in front of the other, I paced my breathing first like I always do. I had my iPod on this time and I had the volume on low so I could talk to Cindy. I had to find a slower pace because it was so crowded, so it was easy to just tell myself to enjoy. I looked around at all the other women, some were mom/daughter teams, some sister/sister, some were groups. Every shape, size, color and speeds. I felt the kinship immediately. I was so happy I was running after the flexor injury. I was so happy my family was sleeping soundly at the hotel.
Once again I took the time to take it all in. I heard Jim's voice telling me I'd be fine. Friday we ran a trial 5K and afterward he told me I was a strong runner, that I'd do well. That came back to me in the first 10 minutes of the race. I felt peaceful, which is a weird thing to be feeling in a 15K race, but it's true. The conversation I had with my coach that day about my not feeling like a "real" runner came back to me too. Jim said I AM a true runner, I just choose to enjoy it. He said I took what I needed from my training and I use it to fit my running.
I've been thinking a lot about this, since I haven't been able to run I've had the time to think. And I think it goes back to my coach. Right from the start he trained me to enjoy running. Jim's method of coaching is to instill confidence and comfort. I'm not the only one to see this. Quite a few people have told me how much they get out of Jim's training whether it's personal training, running or even fitness of all levels. He's even tempered, calm and reassuring. He has a straight forward attitude that is mixed with just the right amounts of teaching, positive encouragement and discipline that makes us believe in our own abilities. So it's no wonder that I have taken my own road to my personal running goals. Between Jim's easy going words of encouragement and my own longing to enjoy ALL of my life it's only natural for me to find the joy in running.
Today I am tired and sore and...yes...very happy. I feel good about myself and I'm back to running. I have more goals, like running Boston someday. Honestly, I think it will be 2010 but that's ok. I have plenty of time to reach that goal. I also think it would be VERY cool to run that particular race with my coach. I haven't told him that part yet though.....lol. Just seems fitting since it's because of him I am a runner, don'tcha think????
This post was prompted by my friend Sherry's blog post. http://www.blogger.com/profile/02082457871394785441 Sherry was bitten by the "I'm gonna enjoy this gift" bug on Saturday while volunteering for the TriAmerica series. (and she thought that bug was a noseeum). Sherry has been training for her first triathalon since October and was feeling a whole lot of emotions during Saturday's race. She met someone who she saw as a wonderful athlete. He took the time out of his race to wish her luck and tell her she'll do a great job. I felt it in her post when she said she realized at that moment that she had a choice to race hard or to stop and smell the flowers along the way, and she "chose the latter". Sherry wants to enjoy her first triathalon next week. She wants to come away from it knowing she's an athlete, that she can finish what she set out to do. All of us who know her already know she'll do that. But it was the words of that man that struck her soul. Made her understand that what she is going to do that day is wayyy deeper than finishing her first tri with a good time. It's about an inner feeling of an accomplishment that only she can give herself. Anyone can tell you to run real fast, pedal your bike hard, swim across the pool. Only Sherry can actually do that for herself in the end. It's really up to us to see that commitment we made to ourselves pay off. It's a very fine line between racing so hard we lose the joy, and racing hard enough that we do a good job AND can still love what we're doing. Sherry got that from that athlete she met on Saturday. I understand that because that's what I got from my coach, Jim. Only I didn't "get it" until mile 2 of my marathon.
Sherry wrote that she hopes that man could find out what a difference he just made for her. I bet she'll get to tell him. I've been trying to find a way to tell my coach those very words without sounding like a crazed stalker. And crying....lol. Maybe he'll read this and "get it". At least he won't have to run a marathon to figure out that I think he's an awesome coach. He won't get a subliminal message at water table 2 that he made a huge difference in my running. That because of his coaching methods he has created a runner who loves to run, who does stop to smell the flowers along the way and who will be running for a very long time.
I do have a competitive streak in me too, I do plan on meeting a few goals, two of which are running a faster 5K and BOSTON. But you can bet I'm gonna have a good time along the way to getting there. Thanks to my coach Jim AND myself.

Minnie Mouse Race Report
We left for Disney Friday afternoon. We were going to stay 2 nights but my 10 yr old Emily got sick last night. She was up pretty much until I had to leave at 4:30 this morning for the race. I didn't get a whole lotta sleep....So we booked another night, tonight, so Bob could take our 9 yr old son to Epcot. Worked out well, Emily and I slept for 3 hours this afternoon. Hence the early race report! I have some pictures, but I can't download them until I get home. I'll post those later.
I had pasta premivera for dinner at Planet Hollywood....ok, ok....and 2 beers. I carbed this time instead of the steak philly I had before the Sarasota marathon...lol. Went to bed at 10pm, but was up most of the night with Emily. I met my friend Cindy at the big coke cup and we drove over to the Epcot parking lot. Disney bused us over to Animal Kingdom to the starting line. We were early. I even said it didn't look like 3,000 people were running. I was wrong! They began to show up in droves! I ran into my friend Ellyn too! We let her cut us for the port-a-potty, what are friends for??????
We lined up at the 9-11 mm and got ready to go. As we came up on a curve we looked ahead and saw about 1000 runners! It was amazing to see. Then when we got to the end of the curve we looked back and saw another 1000 runners! It was a pretty tight crowd. It wasn't like that for the marathon. I didn't like that feeling at all. It probably worked out though because I couldn't take off like I wanted to, I had to keep a slow pace. I worked a few frolics in when I could.
The first 4 miles went very well. It was warm, but not too bad. A little breeze came through now and then. I hit mile 4 at 42 minutes. Mile 7 at 66 minutes. I wanted to finish at 1:20 but I knew it would be a stretch. I have only been running 3-4 times since the marathon March 2nd, thanks to a hip flexor injury. I was very concerned with injuring it again today, I went easy because of that too. I swear it had nothing to do with the tight proximity to the other runners throughout the entire race...ha!
I was pretty hot by mile 7. By hot, I'm not talking about goodlookin'. I'm talking about sweating like a P-I-G. Very sexy, I know. I took water at every table but it was hard to drink it for some reason. I took note of my running group. I was pretty much staying with the same group of ladies. When I did my 45 second walks I memorized the people I was dropping behind. Then as I started running again, I found myself back with them. Jim is so right, you don't lose much time when you take a quick walk break. I felt rested and invigorated and I wasn't struggling. I love this method because it lets me enjoy these races. I need to be able to talk (oh, big surprise), and I love to see the sights. If I'm not having a good time, I don't want to do it.
I was with Cindy for awhile, but lost her before mile 4. I couldn't see too far ahead. Cindy doesn't like to talk while running so it was probably for the best....lol. Ellyn sprinted past us at mile 2, never saw her again. She was like a blur.
Another thing I love about this walk/run method is, I have some energy to make a strong finish. It feels so fantastic to get into a full out sprint to cross that line strong. Very satisfying.
Cindy finished 6 minutes ahead of me, I never saw Ellyn again.
So I finished at 1:40:08. I had hoped for a 1:20, but my best 5K time is 30:50. Kind of a far reach to hope for 1:20. If I had stayed at my 10 minute pace I would have finished at 1:35 for this 15K. All in all, I am very pleased with 1:40:08. I haven't been able to train for 2 months. Been stuck in the gym on the machines while my flexor healed. And healed it is! It is a little sore right now, but not bad, not bad!! Once again, I had a great time, lots of fun and met some new people. I've been to Disney about 5-6 times but running it gave me a new perspective. It may never be the same for me again!
My next race is Saturday. A 5K run called "Miles For Smiles". All proceeds go to kids with cleft palate. Worthy, worthy cause.

Count Down To Minnie Mouse 15K
We leave for Disney Friday afternoon. I have runner's club at the YMCA on Fridays and HATE to miss it. Luckily my husband cycles so he wants to get a good ride in before we sit in the car for 3 hours. With 2 kids. Who are very excited to go to Disney. Ooooohhhhh, can you say "are we there yet" 4 million times????? UGH.....Anyway, we plan on leaving around 1pm.
My hips are a tiny bit sore today. I did run a little faster yesterday to make up for my wandering pace (or no pace). Although I did go up on some weights at the gym too. I can do 120 lbs on that machine you sit and push back on with lower back and legs. Up to 115 on the abductor. I also did 30 minutes of hills on the bike before I ran yesterday. Maybe my hips are sore from those exercises. I can't seem to get stronger on upper body though. It's driving me crazy.
I'd planned on doing a 3 mile run this afternoon just to see how fast I could do it but I was in a meeting that went on foreverrrr. 10am to 1pm. So I was starving and I have to work at 5pm. No run today.
I'm also running a 5K called "Smile Train 5K" on May 10th. Proceeds go to kids with cleft palet. My friend Ed is running that one too. I jokingly told him I'd race him, but he's a fast runner. He beats me by 15 minutes and he has a knee injury. Illeo-something band injury. Still fast. Maybe I'll bring him a cheesecake before the race. He loves cheesecake....that might slow him down....lol.
Off to do some housework....does it ever end???????

Had A Nice Little Run Today
I wanted to run a 5 miler today, but I woke up not feelin' it. I lounged around the house (if you call laundry, dishes and coloring my hair LOUNGING)....then decided to go to the gym for inspiration. I walked in, it was basically empty. Mike was supposed to be there but was not. I found Jim but he was busy. So I hopped on the bike for a quickie.
This bridge is for the golfers. Florida has a huge amount of people who golf. I do not golf. I think I may have mentioned the fact that I can't play games where I have to wait my turn. I'm a little imature like that.
Just to give you an idea how flat Florida is......

More beauty....you can see the fence where the spider webs are from this view.
Home Sweet Home
My marathon sticker on the back window of my car.

My cool, brand new Asics! Love 'em!!!! Not real sure why I took this one, but there it is! Hope you enjoyed my little wanderings...now you know why I have no idea how fast I could be. I forget my watch most of the time, when I do bring it, I forget to set the timer. I stop and look at everything as if I've never seen any of it before, and I never hestitate to stop for a chat with neighbors and friends.
Within about 5 minutes I was feeling a spark of energy. I glanced to my right and looked out the door....I felt the pull....I finished the 30 minute hill workout and went home to run my route. I hadn't run it since before the marathon. I remembered Non-Runner Nancy's picture tour of her run, she gave me permission to copy her, so I grabbed my camera and headed out. Bye house!
.......HAPPY FEET.......

As you can see, it's long and flat. No hills here in florida. it was about 85 degrees and kinda humid but breezy. Perfect for me! No one was out today though, I was a little lonely....I love when I see the people who are usually out and about, but not today.
I started with a slow jog, letting my flexor get into the swing. I decided to do a 4 miler since I knew I'd be stopping to take some pictures along the way. I felt happy to be out on my route again.
Little Salt Spring is one of those sinkholes. It's pretty deep and the archeologists have divers that go down once a year. They've found all kinds of cool stuff in there. Google it, it's very interesting.
This is so beautiful. In the early mornings the dew shows up all the spider webs in the branches of these trees. There is a wire fence that is hidden but the webs are all over this fence. It's very interesting and I usually have to stop and look real close for the spiders. Funny thing is, I'm petrified of spiders! They are still interesting though.
Kinda like this dead grasshopper. Huge, isn't it?? Gives you an idea how big the spiders are that eat 'em, huh? Yeah...like in a movie! The wood or wolf spiders are as big as my hand. And they come in the house when it rains. My 9 yr old son saw one on his ceiling once and it took us 2 weeks to get him to sleep in his bunk bed again. HA!
I ran through this soccer field because I noticed a bubbler (water fountain to you non-Bostonians) as I was driving by the other day. I hate running on the grass, but I did it for a drink! And guess what.....
Looked a little questionable from there. Check it out close up!
Oh yeah! Out of commission! This meant I'd be stopping at my work down the street, which is my 2 mile marker. I got there and ran in for some water. My friend Cheryl's husband was sitting there so I sat and talked with him for about 30-40 minutes. Talk about a leisurely 4 mile run....LOL...but that's how I roll...I enjoy running and I stop to smell the flowers (and look for spiders) along the way. I also forgot to time myself (as usual). I recently told my coach I didn't think I was a true runner because of this. He said I am, that I just let myself enjoy it. And i am enjoying it!
Here's another spot I tend to slow to a walk to look at. I haven't seen a crock in there yet, but I know they're in there.

The picture above is where I was bitten by that dog back in January. The house way over on the right is where the dog came from. The bushes to the left is where the man with no shirt and a gray beard down to his big belly came running out when I started screaming my bloody head off. Nice man. He stayed with me until my husband came.

Running In The Cold
It's true. People do it. I thought they did cross training in the gym in temps below 72 degrees, but I am W-R-O-N-G. I've seen pictures of my fellow runners in snow. I've heard them talking about the obvious perils of running on ice. I've heard their cries of joy as the spring approaches, but I must say....I was comparing it all to Florida winters. Which are too cold for me to run in. So I thought I understood. But I did not.
I made a comment on how yesterday's run had me coughing like I did the ONE time I did run in the cold. This was because I have some funky upper respiratory thing going on, not from the weather. In fact, I'm sick today and realize I had no business running 6 miles yesterday. I can't even get a good deep breath right now, but I'm still glad I did run.
During the cold days, I run after 1-2pm. It's usually about 68 or so. If it's colder guess what. I don't run outside. I go to the gym. Where it's W-A-R-M. Here in Florida we have a different problem. Summer. It can be 102 degrees by midday, so we have to get up really early to beat the sun. Or go to the gym. Otherwise we get something called "heat stroke". It'll be all about hydration real soon Baby. Which causes another problem. I can't stand running with a bottle in my hand. If I plant some bottles along the way, they'll be boiling by the time I'd get to them! So I am in panic mode, knowing full well my summer breeze (cool song BTW) will be over soon. About the time my northerner friends are coming out in full force, I will be miserably pedalling on the stationary, rowing on the rower or being bored to tears on the elliptical. Actually, I do enjoy the rower. I put the fan right on me and the sound of the water in the wheel helps me pretend I'm on the Charles in Boston. Which is something I never ever would have thought of doing when I lived there. Oh...did I mention that? I'm from the Boston area. I moved to Florida almost 5 years ago...heehee! So I do know real cold. That is why I do not live there anymore. Snowsuits, shovels, boots, hats, mittens, snotty noses....NO THANKS! Been there, done that and you can believe I complained from September to June. Yes I did.
My husband used to ask me to sit out on the deck with him after dinner in the cold seasons. I'd say no. He'd tell me to get a BLANKET and enjoy the cool night air. It's a miracle we're still married. He loves to snow ski, snow mobile, camp, all that weird stuff people do outside in the cold. I don't like that. Maybe that's why my entire family fell on the floor laughing when I said I wanted to run a marathon. Hmmmm...mebbee! But I showed them, didn't I? Ran my 1st marathon 4.5 months into training. Thanks to my friend/coach/science teacher, Jim. I told him I wanted to run a marathon, he said ok, here's what ya gotta do. I did it and I finished the race. Not even last, imagine! Now I want to do Boston. Not all of Boston, just run the marathon (ha) kinda perverted joke, teehee...
So, until they make a snorkelly snowsuit I can wear and still run comfortably in, I will leave the fridgid weather to you crazy northerners. I like my chest DEfrosted, thank ya verra much. I like to feel the wind in my hair, not the icicles breaking off my hair clear down to the root. If I'm gonna slip while running, let it be on a banana peel I can SEE and quite possibly (but probably NOT) avoid and not on black ice. If I need to do a hurdle, let it be over a crock and NOT a snowbank.
Here's to you all up there, may the spring be in your step and in the air, may the flowers lean toward you as you run by, may you enjoy the perfect running weather headed your way soon. While I'm back in the gym....sniff, sniff.....

I Am Running Again!
Yahoo for me! I am so happy! Monday I ran 3.7 miles with my coach. We took it easy between my flexor and his quads, but it was a great run. I skipped yesterday (like a good grasshopper) and daydreamed all day about running 6 miles today. But I wasn't feeling too good. I have some upper respiratory thing going on. So staying true to myself, I said...."I'm a goin' anyway". I started off with yoga this morning, got nice and stretched out and out the door I went.
Now, I was doing a 6 mile loop. From the gym to my house is exactly 3 miles. I figured I'd leave the car there, run to my house, hydrate, then run back to the gym. That way I could hop on the elliptical or bike for a nice cool down. So guess what happened. As I was walking out the door to start the 2nd 3 miles (finished the 1st 3 in 32 minutes BTW), the phone rings. It's the school (thankfully, I answered) my Emily (she's my 10 year old) was sick and needed to be picked up. So guess where my car was. Yeah...3 miles away at the gym. Welcome to MY world....lol. Luckily the whole school knows I run (my son tells everyone he sees) so when I explained to the nurse I needed a few minutes, she understood.
I was coughing by this point and my chest burned like I had run in 50 degree weather. Which, if you know me personally, you know I only needed to do THAT once. Back in November I ran 2 miles in 50 degrees. Took me 3 days to defrost my chest. I will never run in the cold again. Good thing I live in Florida. So anyway, back to the story.
I booked it out the door and down the street. I ran faster than usual figuring I'd just walk when I had to. Funny thing happened. I ran that mile in just under 8 minutes. Then I walked until my chest stopped freaking out and did it again. I tried to keep that up, it was pretty difficult. I felt light-headed a few times but I had a sick punkin waiting for me. By the time I got a half mile from the gym I was ready to hitch a ride. But I'm a wicked chicken and did not do that. I walked the last 1/2 mile. Coughing and light-headed. I didn't mind the light-headednes though....haha!! My total time for the 2nd 3 miles was 31 minutes. First 3 miles was 32 minutes. This proves 2 things to me....
1. My coach is right when he says you do not lose much time by walking when you need to.
2. I think I have a good chance of shaving my 5K time rather quickly.
I feel fine, flexor is a tiny bit tender and I am a very happy person right now. I'm not coughing too much now either. I have been training for endurance for so long that it felt so wrong to push myself today. My mantra has been "slow and steady wins the race" since the first time my feet hit the pavement. Any time I started to feel winded I have walked it out. But the marathon is over. I am free to test myself. I thought I had, but today when I was rushing to get back to my daughter I kept pushing through the weakness and light-headedness from the difficulty breathing. Emily was my goal.
I have my little one all tucked in her bed, tylenol administered, iPod beside her (she's a music fanatic like her Mom). She's looking quite happy (and healthy I might add). Sometimes even kids need some time off. She didn't need to fake a headache, but let's not tell her that part. Love that kid....

Body For Life Update
I have lost a total of 7 lbs. My body fat went down and my muscle thingy went up. Very slightly, but still in the right direction. And that is without running for 6 weeks! I've been doing a ton of crunches and I see the results of that too. My waist is getting a little curvier and I can get into some jeans Kerri gave me. Kerri is my TWENTY-ONE year old daughter. Yeah, how COOL is THAT? So it's paying off. I'm curious to see how getting back into running will effect this. I have been doing plenty of cardio at the gym while my flexor heals, so I'm sure that helped. It's not the same as running though. That's all for the update for now.....
Boston Marathon Day!
I saw some of the Boston Marathon while I was at the gym this morning. It was so exciting to watch the women going neck and neck for so long! A few blogger friends ran it too. Nitmos finished in 3:59:03! Wow, awesome run Nitmos!! Hugs to you!! And hurry up and post a detailed race report, I'm DYING!
.
After the first woman crossed the finish line, I took a run with my coach, Jim. I was so fired up from watching the marathon. I think we did a 5k in about 44 minutes. Pretty slow, but a great workout considering my flexor and Jim's quads. His were a little achy from a run he did on a rubber kind of track. I went a little easy for him. And if you believe THAT I have a bridge I'd like to sell ya. I feel fantastic and ready to train for the Minnie 15K. Jim predicts a 1:40 finish, which means I need to come in under that. It's a psychological game we play. He throws out a time, I endeavor to beat it.
.
So I'm thinking of buying a Minnie Mouse costume to run the race in. Kinda goofy, huh? (no pun intended) I figure no one knows me there anyway, so why not?? If I do decide to wear it, I'll post a pic here. Maybe. I think I'll check out some pictures from last year's run, see if anyone else did that. I have heard this is the last year Disney will hold the Minnie 15K. I'm very glad I am running it. My husband and the kids are excited to spend the weekend there too. We'll have a great time no matter what!

Myakka 10K Race

Ivolunteered for this race. I knew I couldn't run it but I wanted to have the opportunity to see everyone. I had a great time, I knew I would. Ed and Joan Morgan were there, they are very special people. (pictured here with me in their Zoomer t-shirts) Bob and Carol Gueyer were there too, also pretty special. I saw Yuli (bib number 82) for the first time since the Sarasota Marathon, LOVE HER! I even saw a woman I ran with at the Sarasota Marathon! I thought I recognised her so I ran over to find out. Her name is Carol and she remembered me too. Today was her 70th birthday! (Carol and Ellen are in the picture with bib number 70) She looks 55, no kidding! I met her friend Ellen who is running the Minnie 15K at Disney may 4th. I'll be looking for her there. Cynthia is running it too (forget her last name!) Might meet her for dinner while we're there. My coach's wife ran today too. (bib number 92) Bethany always wins. Today was no exception. She's fast. The scary thing is, I need to be as fast as her to qualify for Boston, so when I see her I kinda lose hope....lol. But only when I'm actually looking at her, as soon as she's gone I go back to thinking I can actually pull it off....HA!
.
I also met a woman named Jen who came up and asked me if I was the Kim with the blog. I was so surprised. (Hi Jen, if you're reading this...heehee) Jen was there with her husband, first time I met them. She said she's been reading for a while now, I was and am, very happy to meet someone that actually comes in here! Sometimes I forget this little journal of mine is out there. I started it to keep track of my training and it's become a pretty big part of me. Jen, it really meant a lot to me to meet you today and I hope to see you again at future races. I should have asked you if you were doing the Minnie 15K at Disney!! (so are ya???)
.
103 people ran the race today. I wish I could have run it, even though I don't really like trails. 95% of the time I was just happy to be a part of it, the other 5% gave me a pang of yearning. I am mentally more than ready for a race, physically I knew there was no way. I feel good about cheering on my fellow runners, I feel good about being smart enough to know I wasn't ready for this race. I met some new friends, visited with some old ones and enjoyed the day. All is good.

Body For Life Update (kinda)

As you can see, I've been working really hard to look like this. At the gym everyday, major cardio workouts and free weights. Yoga and core exercises have paid off. I can't give you the secret of how I got my dark brown eyes to turn green for that picture. Or why I look 20 years younger. And those boobs look fake, I know.
.
Ok, ok. That's not me. OOHHH big surprise! My husband thinks I look like this though. I guess the brain washing does work! Or proof that love is blind, either way works for me. Maybe that's why we've been married 12 years yesterday! Yes!! Congratulations to us! I told someone it was my 12th anniversary and they said these days 12 years is like 32 years. Well it feels like 32 years. KIDDING!!!!! It actually still feels like the honeymoon phase. Except for the 4 kids. These days we fall asleep on the couch waiting for the kids to fall asleep so we can have our alone time. We wake up at 2am, go brush our teeth, hug and go to sleep. We had to hang curtains on the OUTSIDE of my son's window so when we kiss in the jaccuzzi he won't bang on the window and laugh at us. On Saturday mornings we are sometimes awakened to one or more of the kidlings jumping into the middle of our bed. We look over their heads and just smile. When the kids see us cuddle they tell us to get a room. We tell them we would if we had a sitter....
.
Body For Life has taken a backseat to my misery over the hip flexor pain in the...well, hip. I've been off it all week. I haven't reverted back to my potato chip behavior but I haven't been eating right. I start over today. I am going to dive right back into it and not think about running this week. Until Friday. I know it's not really a week PER SAY, but I will go easy on Friday.
.
I got my spikes in. Cute. Purple. Pink was unavailable in my size but the purple is really pretty. I'm so dying to try them out. I walked around the house with them on (spikes not attatched). They feel like slippers. Absolutely no support. I can see why they're just for laps. I'm looking forward to getting some speed work in, but I have to be able to run first I guess.
.
I will admit to being very down these last few days but today is a new day. I'm taking my son to get some new pool toys and I'm going to lay in the sun while they play. I'm going to reflect on all the good things in my life, of which there are MANY, I'm a very, very lucky woman. Jeez, I'm so mushy today!
.
Okay, off to get some pool stuff!

I'm Going For A Run....
In a minute! I came in looking for Sherry. Her husband fell 40 feet last Friday and was in ICU for 3 days! He's still in the hospital but doing better. I don't have all the details, Sherry just said she's hoping to get him home for the weekend. I hope to hear from her soon, but she may be tied up for quite some time. Hugs for you, Sherry!
I ran last Friday and have been fine. Yesterday I wore sandals with 2 inch heels and was limping by the end of the evening. My flexor did not appreciate my choice of footwear and complained. I heard and will obey, no more heels for me. Lesson learned.
Off I go now. I have some thoughts to think.

Still Feelin' Foxy....
Well HEY! I had a great run on Friday with Jim and I am not hurting any worse! Last time I ran, it put me out of commission for 2 weeks. This time I feel even better! The road to recovery is one I'd rather have run instead of limped, but I'm almost there. I feel FREE!
I was hoping to run today after the the gym this morning, but I worked for Alycia. She's prego and has the flu, poor punkin. I may need to fill in for her tomorrow too, we'll see. Seems like now that I CAN run, I can't find the time. There's a Zoomer run tomorrow night but if I have to work the day I won't make the run. I'm a wife and Mom first! So I'll just make the family run with me! What a GREAT idea!
Most people who know me, know I've taken on the new goal of speeding up my runs. I really want to shoot for qualifying for Boston 2009. I know it's a stretch to speed train for 7 months and get a qualifying time in October but hey....I'd rather try and fail than not try at all. Even if I don't make it, I won't feel like I failed anyway. I love to run and the sense of accomplishment and pride I feel from every run is something I cherish.
I got a little bonus this morning during my core class at the YMCA. During the exercises we were listening to a CD when a song came on we all knew. First let me tell you, Jim teaches this class as well as being my mentor/coach/trainer. He is also a singer/songwriter. I am a music fanatic, I love all kinds of music. I have CDs for cleaning, showering, laying by the pool, running...etc. SO...when Jim said the singer was Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20, I quite confidently told him he was wrong....LOL. I didn't know who it was but I KNEW it wasn't Rob. He insisted it was. I said I'd bet him $50 it was not. He said how about a Subway sandwich (which I do love) but I said NO! Then, my brain kicked in. I had an awesome idea. I'm all giggly just remembering the moment....heehee. I said....how about a speed training session! He got all confident and said IF he WAS wrong, he'd give me TWO speed training sessions. Ooooohhhhhlala!! Can you say JACKPOT babyyyyyy??????? I got all warm inside. I knew I was right. I know Rob Thomas's voice. I also know my ticket to Boston is through my trainer. He got me to the finish line of my first marathon in just under 5 months. His coaching and training methods work for me. I hear the instructions and just do it. This is gonna be GREAT!
I even made him shake on it....lol
I guess I should tell you, Jim said if it wasn't Rob Thomas, it had to be Chad Kroeger from Nickelback. He was right about that. I didn't think it was, because I'd never seen Chad with short hair except for the video to the song we were betting against. So technically Jim did know the singer's name. I only knew it wasn't Rob Thomas. I offered to call it a truce but Jim was kind enough to call me the winner. So I get some speed training from the one person I know who can get me to Boston. I almost feel guity. Almost.....

YMCA Runners Club Report
That sounds so impressive, huh? Like there were 20 people running this morning....lol. It was just me and Coach Jim, but it was a great run. I have had a hip flexor injury since the marathon almost 5 weeks ago. I have attempted to run twice, the first time went well, but then I was hurting again. The second time I couldn't even run more than 5 steps. I wanted to run last Wed but Jim said to wait. I'm so glad I listen to him, he was right AGAIN.
So....I took my core exercise class this morning at 9am. I love that class. Got me all stretched out and ready. OH...the new running shoes I got were not very comfy, I mentioned this to Jim the other day and he looked at them. Come to find out....they are for people who hit the ground heel first. I'm a nuetral runner and so those shoes were not right for me. He pointed out the extra lift at the heel and no gel at the inside ball of the foot. Hmmmmm.....made me wonder if that had any effect on my running lately. Or lack thereof. Jim advised me to wear my old faithfuls for today's run, and I did.
HUGE difference. I felt the initial tenderness, nothing too bad, but I noticed right away the pain on lift off and impact was gone. I'm thinking that the flexor was irritated by my feet not hitting the pavement correctly. I am expecting my new Asics Gel Stratus in a couple days. YAY!
We started off slow and steady, my muscle felt better and better with every step. My happiness level rose right along with it! We did the walk/run, staying at about a 9-9.5 mm pace. We decided on a 3 mile run. Today's quote was "Retain The Improvement". Which just means "Don't Over Do It And Screw Up The Future Of Your Running, Kim". Yeah, see?? I can read between the lines.
On the run back, I was introduced to a little something special. It's called a "fartlek". Pronounced "fahlek" The "T" is silent, didn'tcha know??? Here's what happened....a man ran past us (as if we were running slow) and I jokingly sped up and passed him (being a smarty-pants) and then slowed back down. Jim said that was a "fahlek". Hmm....seemed interesting. He said people use the technique for speed training. Hmmmm, even MORE interesting. So we gave that a shot. You run a normal pace for about 5 minutes, then do a full out sprint for a very short distance, like 50 feet. I LOVED IT! I felt like a rebel because I've been holding back, keeping a 10 mm pace for the marathon training. It felt spectacular and I can't wait to do it again!!! I feel excited about the speed training, I wanted to start Monday but that "quote for the day" kept popping into my head. You know...."Retain The Improvement". So I'll see how I feel Monday....HA!! Just kidding!!! I'll give it another week. But then I'm OFF!!!!
I'm still doing the happy dance. I'm so happy. Sherry....ready for a run girlfriend?????

Still No Running =(
I don't know how much longer I can stand this. Someone mentioned a cortizone shot and I thought that might be the ticket, but I asked Jim this morning about them. He said it just takes away the pain. That's no good, because I'm planning on some serious speed/hill training. I'll wind up hurting it worse. It would be like bashing your numb hand with a hammer. Would it hurt? No. Would that stop the damage? No again.
So I guess I need to learn a little patience. That's something I have never had. I open presents on Christmas Eve and rewrap them before anyone finds out. I search for birthday gifts like a 9 year old child. I don't play any games I have to wait my turn for. I can honestly tell you, patience is NOT my best quality. It's not one of my qualities at all. Yeah....whatever.
I do have a slight problem. I can't think of a single hill here in Florida. Can you?? Maybe the bridge in Sarasota, but I don't see me heading out that way 4 times a week. Maybe I could run the beaches. That's supposed to be a workout and a half. But I'd just lay in the sand, I know me. I love the beach. Maybe the stairmaster??? GOD, I will hate that thing. Safe to say I most likely will avoid that particular machine. If the pool were not so flipping freezing I could do some stuff in there. Like float around on the raft with a beer and a book....HA!! Too bad I'm serious.
Well ya know what? My kids and husband are home this week. I will plan on going to the gym early and doing my regular stuff this week. Like a little break I guess. I'll pretend I WANT a break from running. I'll trick my mind a little.
So did I mention I ordered up some spikes???? I went left-wing and got a pretty bluish-purple color. Okay, so I couldn't get the pink in my size, but these have pretty flowers on them. And I can always spray paint them pink, right? No? We'll see. So much for tricking my mind, huh.
I'll just admit it, I want to run.

Well....
I did my on the ball training class this morning. I love that class. We had a little extra bonding today, Bonnie and I. Gail may have been in on it too and Barbara WISHES she was....LOL. I was bitten by an insect (hopefully not a spider) on an area usually covered by a bra. Ya, I know! 3 weeks ago! It was not healing and the whole "area" felt different so I had a doc appointment after running. Meanwhile, I had Bonnie take a peek....lol. She pretended to protest but she was a good friend and looked. She said it didn't look too bad. I told the doctor I'd probably laugh when he checked it out because I laugh when I am nervous. He said for me not to be offended if he didn't laugh. PFFFFT...I'd have been offended if he did! So anyway, I have some stuff for it, it should be gone soon. Not sure why I felt the need to share this with you all, but there it is!
I could not run today. I basically walked maybe a mile. I tried to run a couple times, but I'm afraid of hurting it more. I ran last week and did fine, but then haven't been able to run since. I'd rather baby it another week and then be free to start my training.
Training for what, you may be asking yourself. Training for the Cape Cod marathon! I am going to TRY to qualify for Boston 2009. I asked my coach, Jim, if it would be possible. At first he made a face and said shaving 30 minutes would be great, but 1:48??? So I asked him again today, knowing full well I was going for it anyway, and he said YES, I could possibly pull it off. But I have to say, Jim has never ever said one negitive thing about any goal I've set. He's always very positive, which is what got me to the Sarasota marathon. He never let me think he doubted my ability even once. His "of course-you-can" attitude is what makes him a great coach. So here we go again.
Training begins the very moment my hip flexor is healed. Let the games begin!

Cape Cod Marathon
I spoke with Jim at the gym about shaving 1:47 off my marathon time. He says just shaving 30 minutes would be awesome, 1:47 is a stretch. So that means it COULD be done. The only thing is, I think I talked my sis-in-law Michelle to run the Cape Cod marathon too. She's a little tiny bit reluctant, but I know she can do it! If Michelle does run with me I'd just run it for fun and stay together. But if she finds that she can't or she doesn't want to.....well then I'm gonna go for it.
I kinda feel like I felt when I first decided to run a marathon last October. Excited. Nervous. More than a little crazy. How cool would it be to run THE Boston marathon????? Especially being a Boston native. I have 7 months to train for this. And since I'm the captain....I'm giving it all I've got. This time I know what I'm in for. I have the breathing and endurance down. I just need the speed. While I wouldn't say I made any huge mistakes in the Grouper Run, I can definately think of a couple things I can do differently. Especially with the training part.
I guess I can combine my Body For Life challenge, shaving my 5K time and training to qualify for Boston into one big goal. It will all be a benefit toward the ultimate goal. And I do have that invite to train with the high school track team.
I need to check into this a little more.

Vanilla Got Free Running Shoes
Well hey! I'm so jealous! I found this blogger through Sherry's blog (see both links to the right) who is a riot. I peek at his blog everyday and crack up! Very funny guy. Chicks dig his cool writing skills...more than any nunchuck skills he may have, and I wouldn't doubt he has those too. So he got a pair of Pearl Izumi Synchro Infinity running shoes sent to him to try out. I was right there reading his post about opening the box. Removing the tissue paper, smelling that "oh-so-new" sneaker smell that will be destroyed in one mile.....and I was feeling the euphoria with him. How very, very flattering to have a company send you their newest product to try out! It's like being a celebrity! Maybe I should get his autograph before he's too famous!
So these particular shoes are black and gray. They look pretty manly. So manly that it makes me wonder what the girly version looks like. Pink???? That's my favorite color. The manly version even has shocky things that look like big teeth growling. Do the girly ones have veneer-like teeth? Maybe a few little sparkly decorations? I'm all about the girly look. I'll check into it and get back to ya.
Wait a minute now....this blogger is the "Shave Your 5K Time" challenge guy. If he wins, that will not be fair....I'm going to have to look into this a little more. I think he may have an edge. A "one-up". Hmmmmm.....just the phsychological boost alone could possibly make him faster. I feel my inner competitor awakening.
Too bad I can't even run. I hate my hip flexor.....Grrrrrrrr
