Wednesday Is THE Big Day

I'm going to run tomorrow. Instead of the thrill, the excitement, I'm feeling kinda....nervous! I haven't run for 12 days. I have tried to rest the knee and let it heal. I still did my classes, even spin. I should admit my knee felt tender at the last spin class (along with another part of me that should NEVER feel tender) so I kept it a little less ferocious than the others in the class.

Tomorrow I'll just take it easy. Keep a slow pace, do some walk/running. Enjoy the nature and the company. We have a new runner who joined our Running Club. Jim ran with him last week, (I had to go home because I thought I was getting the flu)...(but it wasn't the flu)...(so I missed Runners Club)...(but I wasn't feeling well anyway) ANYWAY...Jim ran with Chris and told me he was doing awesome! Chris is training for his very first half marathon! Just between me and you Blogger-friends...I'd be very curious to see how he feels after running 10 miles. That was the distance I came away from KNOWING I was going to do a full marathon. Out of 15 of the Endurance Project team members, I think Bobby was the only one who got that too. By our 10 mile training run, his wife, Michelle said he was taping the full marathon map of the Sarasota Grouper Marathon to his fridge...LOL..Bobby is going to teach me to dive and swim, incidentally.

I'm so wicked tired. I'll post after running tomorrow.

To all my hurting, injured running friends, please feel better soon. Rest up and be strong for the next run. We need to take care of ourselves so we can do this crazy thing we love so much.

Namaste!!!!

Message From Coach Jim

Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008

Hello All!!!!!
We did it! WOW.
Hooooray!!!
To God be the glory.

Savor the soreness.R.I.C.E. (as in rest, ice, compression, elevation)Baths are good.Jetted baths are very good.Sleep heals.Finishing IS winning. We survived it. We can savor that we all overcame the elements! Blessed are the overcomers!

Highlights…

First of all: Abbey – Happy Birthday. You motivated all of us with your kind letter of encouragement. You were with us in spirit on your birthday. We miss you and hope you enjoy much success and continue running in Chi-town/Naperville.

Sherry – Thank you so much for the words of encouragement for your teammates in NP Endurance Project. Your determination to continue as an endurance athlete is awesome. Much success in your second consecutive Breast Cancer 3-Day (60 miles) in a couple weeks.

Jacki – Also Thank you for your positive thoughts and encouragement to all of us. You want to do your best in everything and we appreciate you.

Jada – Our teammate who’s quest in this began as a "I might like to do a triathlon some day." SO proud of you. Jada is endurance. HALF MARATHON FINISHER! Really, the legs will feel normal again. You kept the course and finished the race. YOU DID IT! Savor the soreness, let it remind you of your success. New challenges will come, but for now all of your teammates are so happy that you stayed in it all the way.

Cindy – You’re steady, persistent, determined, unwavering, and many more positive adjectives. It was awesome the way you battled through the training and finished the race! Having your husband Tony along during many of our training sessions was a great joy and added a lot of additional fun to our team of exercise enthusiasts.

Linda – Overcomer, not going to give up, get me to the church on time! (race started and finished at Hope church) The spirit of the modern-day runner, staying in shape, knowing the responsibilities will resume when "run break" is over, enjoying the music and enjoying the scenery along the way. Half marathon finisher!

Tess – Spectacular, Totally in your element, and thriving on the day. Total success in your goals. Your performance was awesome. You have some friends here that love to run and train with you. Your race was pure joy. Savor the ice!

Kim – Coach, motivator, artist, music-lover, host, jewelry maker, pasta-provider! Your spirit of the marathon is a driving force for this program. Your vision for creating the logo and doing the embroidery on our uniforms helped us feel like a team. Oh and did we mention you continue to improve as a runner? You are probably in the rarest percentage of runners – first completing an entire marathon, before completing a half marathon. Bring on the next challenge!

Michelle – Wow. You are a total athlete. Endurance training is something that rocks team-sport athletes and coaches out of bounds. You stayed in and scored. Never giving up is the point. You made that point. You persevered. You had never run anything beyond a 2-miler 12-weeks ago. Now you’re a half-marathon finisher.

Ed Morgan – Another steady, steady, steady performance. Overcoming the heat of the day and the quadriceps injury and the flu. Plus being our driver of the RV team headquarters. Thank you to Joan Morgan also a runner who has been a great source of encouragement and friendship. The pouring-rain lightning bolt-jolting training run and RV breakfast at the State Park is a most-memorable training run of this project. Ed you are meeting your goal of staying in training to complete the NY City marathon in a couple weeks. You are a total runner.

Frank – You made a tough and great decision to keep your eyes on the prize today. Your dedication and determination represents endurance. You are always on the go, and you provide so much motivation to us by the life you live. Fitness is a lifestyle and pleasure. You are awesome.

Josephine – Phenomenal. You are poetry in motion. Any distance, anywhere, anytime. You are an amazing athlete, and wonderful teammate. Your scintillating performance in winning the senior grandmaster provides us all with a feeling of victory! You should feel victorious for also, 12-weeks ago, having not run a race longer than 10k. Add 20k and Half marathon to that list… Now science will wonder, does a nice wine every night provide an additional benefit to some athletes? Works for you!

Bob – We have a new monster in our midst. Bob, there isn’t a sport you suck at. And by giving "running a try" is something that will serve you well for years to come. You were our team’s top finisher and you are purely gifted as a runner. It was sheer joy for all of us to watch your natural ability emerge through the 12-weeks of training. Let the legs rest. They can heal before your next challenge of the full marathon. Downtime is vital to gaining strength for endurance. You are a great friend, you lift the team and lead us.

Coach Bethany – With us all the way. Our guru, leader, no-nonsense coach. See Bethany. See Bethany Run. We are all better runners because of you. You motivate us with your leadership, grace and determination. And by example. Especially by example.

Jim – Thank you, everyone. You are so special a group. I am so happy with how well WE all did.

As an event, we all know that the half-marathon race would be improved if started an hour earlier, during the cooler part of the day. That one issue had an influence on performance, body temp, heart rate, hydration requirements, etc. Remember, the roads and trails will wait for you. Your body needs some down time. Let your next several runs be very light. Very easy. Enjoy your success.

Josephine, Frank – do great in Arizona on the Steps!

Ed, stay down and get well. You will do better in New York by giving yourself some additional recovery days right now.

Let’s remember to run from a position of strength. If you’re sore, the soreness will subside. When it does, ease back in with some very light running. Continue to regain strength.

Some of you will want to know right now about our NEXT GOAL???? We will likely resume a Full-marathon preparation a little over one-month from now, beginning early December. We’ll have time to condition ourselves for a full marathon. The target goal will be the Sarasota Marathon Grouper Run on February 15, 2009. We’ll have a 10-week group training phase to the Full. In the interim, let yourself enjoy a "month" of very easy cross-training and some occasional shorter-distance running. Some 5ks coming up. Don’t worry about holding onto the 13-mile long run base, we’ll build it back up and beyond starting in December. We did it! WOW. Hooooray!!!To God be the glory. Savor the soreness.R.I.C.E. (as in rest, ice, compression, elevation) Baths are good. Jetted baths are very good. Sleep heals. Finishing IS winning.

Your Coaches, Jim, Bethany and Kim

Post Marathon Random Thoughts.......

I'm more tired today than I have been all week. I wonder if it took this long for the endorphins and adrenalin to wear off. Unfortunately I have to work tonight, so no naps for me!

I have a hip flexor injury (Sherry, you were right girlfriend) So ice and warmth with some Aleve is what I'm doing for that. I can't run for a couple more weeks anyway. Good chance to mend that injury. Other than that, the backs of my knees are a little sore, nothing I can't ignore.

I'm looking forward to some speed work. I've been checking out the sprinting shoes today. Some of them are so cute! I have heard they're not allowed on some tracks though, so I need to do a little research on that.

I found out Katie Holmes ran her NY marathon 2 minutes faster than I did! I got a little kick out of that. She ran BRALESS! Geez, sometimes I wear TWO....I can't imagine that. Seems crazy.

I learned yesterday the first woman who finished the Grouper Run has been disqualified for taking a one mile short cut! At first I sympathised with her because I got off track 3 times myself, but I've since found out the elites follow a pacer. But isn't it possible she may have gotten ahead of the pacer? I don't know....I hate to think she did it on purpose. For now, I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.

I did my core exercise class this morning, it was tougher than usual, because of the flexor injury. I love the group though, so it was nice to see everyone. My coach, Jim, runs that class. I wore my marathon shirt to it and he thought it was a cool shirt. I told him I'd trade him his next CD for it!!! Haha!! For those who didn't notice the music link to the right here, (see the cowboy) that is my coach. He's working on his next CD and I saw the opportunity to get my hands on it early by trading my marathon shirt! Smart girl, I am. For those of you who do not have a cool marathon shirt to trade, his CD will be available through iTunes. Not sure when, but I'll post it when I find out.

There have been almost 1,000 visits to this blog, which I started at the end of January. I am touched and pleased that so many people have popped in for a visit! Hopefully it's not just one person visiting 200 times a day.....lol.....but seriously, thank you to all of you who have been in here. It means more to me than I can say.

Have a wonderful weekend, run hard! (I don't know why runners say that to each other, but it sounds so cool, huh??? LOL

14.4 Mile Run

Oh, just typing in those words puts joy in my heart! Yes, it's true....I ran 14.4 miles last Saturday! And lived to tell about it....LOL

I had taken about 10 days off and had only run a few short runs because of the dog bite. I was worried I'd missed so much time and had fallen off the schedule a bit. I had run 11 miles 14 days before and did very well, so I decided I'd try the 14.4. If I couldn't do it, then I'd have to rethink the marathon.

I worked the night before and didn't get to bed until after 1am. I woke up about 8am and immediately wanted to stay in bed. I woke my husband and told him that. He told me I'd be very unhappy with myself if I didn't give it a shot. He said he'd come out and meet me here and there to give me drinks and encouragement and if I wanted to give up he'd drive me back home. Which he knew I wouldn't like either. He knows me too well...lol.

Jim told me to try to keep to a 12 minute per mile pace. It seemed like a very slow pace but he explained that it was the best way to conserve enough energy to finish such a long distance. When you're running a long distance, he said by running too fast in the beginning, trying to "bank" some time would only make me "bankrupt". There is no banking time because time is energy used. Use too much too fast, you won't have any near the end when you'll need it the most. His words of wisdom stayed in my head. Jim has given me so much valuable information, it's because of him I've gotten this far, so how could I ignore his advice now?? I couldn't!! I listened and went sooooo slowwww in my first 3 miles at about 31 minutes. After that I was just tired enough to be able to stay on pace without too much effort. I watched my time only to do the 30 second power walks every 10-12 minutes.

At about 6.5 miles I saw my husband's car up ahead. I ran up and he gave me some gatorade. He said he saw me running and I looked like an athlete!!! LOL I was glad to know I didn't look like I was about to fall over. He couldn't get over that I wasn't out of breath. I hadn't even noticed that! I felt great. Not too tired either. I got back into it and looked down Salford. UGH....it was such a long road. I kept picking out spots up ahead to run to so I wouldn't pay so much attention to the distance. It seemed like within moments I was at the end and taking a right toward the turn around point. And then I heard it. A dog. Oh no. I stopped short and waited but it stayed on his porch. I walked slowly by and it didn't bother me. I got out of it's sight and ran to my turn around spot. I called Bobby to let him know where I was. I still had my gatorade so I was good, but he got worried when I told him about the dog. We stayed on the phone as I passed by it again, then off I went.

The run back seemed easier than the run out. I felt very tired but overall I felt great. I was walking about every 8 minutes for about 1.5 minutes by about mile 10. Then my left calf started cramping up. I could hear Jim's voice telling me to walk it out. So I walked until it didn't hurt as much, then ran until it hurt again. I probably walked the entire last mile but in a power walk.

I was SOAKED and very salty. I had salt chrystals all over my arms and face. It was so weird. Bobby met me in the driveway. It was surreal. I had run 14.4 miles. I felt like I was in a dream. He said he was so proud of me, that he felt a degree of awe. That means so much to me. He hugged me even though I was soaked (that's true love)...When I got in the house I looked at the stop watch and I'd finish in 2:43. That worked out to a 11:24 minute mile. Just 30 seconds faster than Jim said to go for! I started to cry. I was so completely overjoyed. It seemed like I had walked so much, I really didn't think my time would be good. I wanted to come in at 2:30, but I'm happy with 2:43. Even 5 months ago I couldn't have run one mile.

First thing I did was shoot an email to Jim. I hadn't run into him lately so he didn't know I was running 14.4 that weekend, I knew he'd be surprised. He was very happy too, and in the same sentence told me when to run my 20 miler....LOL...oh, he's such a TRAINER!!!!! LOL

Feb 9th, I'll be running 20 miles. my husband and kids are going to set up water stations along the way and yell out words of encouragement. I'll have my own little mini marathon....LOL...I'm shooting for 4 hours, wish me luck!!!

Sarasota Florida Grouper Run

Hello!

I'm Kim. This is my very first blog, so bear with me while I find my way!

I signed up at my neighborhood YMCA last October, thinking I'd like to get toned up...maybe even start eating right (ha). I met the wellness coach, Jim, who took me around to check out the machines etc. Then he asked me a magical question....

JIM: Do you have any goals?
KIM: Wellllllllll......
JIM: What brought you to the gym?
KIM: Ummmmmm.......
JIM: Would you like more energy?
KIM: Ok!!
JIM: What type of exercise do you usually do?
KIM: Well, I walk to the mailbox.....

At this point, I decided to be honest with Jim. So I told him I never, ever exercise, I eat whatever I want, I love beer and I put butter (lots) on almost everything I eat. And I'd LOVE to run a marathon some day. This got his attention. I didn't know it, but Jim and his wife are avid runners. They've both run many marathons and even won some! I hit the jackpot and my trek to the Sarasota Grouper Run had begun.........

More to come.....
